Drunk driver’s vehicle hits ute on Gold Coast and catches fire

A suspected intoxicated driver collided with a pickup truck before his car caught fire with a tow truck driver inside.

After the collision on Monday morning, the 24-year-old motorist reportedly blew a blood-alcohol level of 0.211, more than four times the legal limit.

Mr. Kemp recalled, “I was simply sitting at the lights, waiting for them to turn green, when suddenly, boom, straight up the clacker.”

Mr. Kemp’s rear-facing camera captured the moment of contact before further drama transpired when he left his vehicle.

As the driver of a tow truck tried to move the back vehicle, it suddenly erupted into flames, with the driver just fleeing the cabin.

The driver of the vehicle then yelled, “My car is on fire… buddy, put it the f*** out, put it the f*** out,” while holding a cell phone to his head. Mr. Kemp doused the automobile with a fire extinguisher before police apprehended the driver and administered a breath test.

After police obtained the reading, the man from Varsity Lakes was brought to a holding facility for additional testing, where he reportedly attacked an officer.

He was accused with driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated assault on a police officer. The man will appear before Southport Magistrates Court on August 29.

Mr. Kemp said to 7NEWS, “When he realized how much trouble he was in, he became rather enraged.”

The event left Mr. Kemp with just a stiff neck and minor damage to his ute.
