Mom, 4 kids struck by hit-and-run driver in Brooklyn

Wednesday night in Brooklyn, four young children and their mother were struck by a hit-and-run driver who allegedly ignored school bus stop signs, according to police and witnesses.

The 41-year-old mother, who was pushing her infant in a stroller, was picking up her children from the school bus at the intersection of Avenue J and New York Avenue in Midwood at 5 p.m., police said.

“It was truly awful… “The stroller was actually on the ground,” Joanne Johnson, a witness, told The Post.

All five victims were transported in stable condition to a local hospital. According to police, the children ranged in age from 1 to 8 years old.

According to police and a witness, some of the children were leaving the bus when they were hit.

According to Johnson, the woman was pinned under the bus while yelling for assistance.

“[The mother] was likely crying because she believed she was going to die, while also thinking about her children, of course. Thus, it was quite dramatic,” she continued.

The driver fled the scene, but the unoccupied vehicle was recovered by police shortly after the collision.

No arrests have been made.

It is unclear whether the woman is the mother of all four children, but Johnson reported that she was picking up at least one girl from the bus stop with a stroller.

Johnson, who lives at the intersection, stated that she heard the White Mercedes before it struck the mother and children.

She said, “The white car just blew past the stop signs.” Unfortunately, the [car] did not stop and continued driving away.

She reported hearing the mother yell, “Help me and my children!”

“Oh Jesus, you just have to pray at that moment because it’s so terrifying,” Johnson said.

The terrified neighbor added, “It was so loud and tense.”
