Mass shooting in Asian city in California leaves nine people dead

Sunday, local law enforcement said that nine individuals were killed in a mass shooting in a primarily Asian city in southern California.

“Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will assist the Monterey Park Police Department in its investigation of a fatal shooting. There are nine fatalities, according to a statement.

The suspect is male, according to the statement, but there is no information regarding his capture or whereabouts.

About eight miles (13 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles, Monterey Park is home to a sizable Asian population.

Saturday, one hour after the Lunar New Year celebration, a shooting reportedly occurred at a dance club.

Wong Wei, a local resident, told the Los Angeles Times that his friend was at the dance club and was in the restroom when the shooting began.

When she emerged, she spotted a gunman and three bodies, including two women and a man he claimed was the club’s manager.

The newspaper added that Seung Won Choi, the proprietor of a seafood BBQ restaurant close to the crime scene, stated that three individuals had entered his establishment and urged him to lock the door.

In KZN, a man was shot and killed in a drive-by incident.

Choi told the newspaper that the three claimed there was a man with a semiautomatic weapon and many rounds of ammo who would reload whenever he ran out.

The Times said that tens of thousands of people had congregated earlier in the day for one of southern California’s greatest two-day Lunar New Year celebrations.

The bulk of the approximately 61,000 residents of Monterey Park are Asian or Asian Americans.

According to the Gun Violence Archive website, there were 647 mass shootings in the United States last year. A mass shooting is defined as an occurrence in which four or more persons were shot or killed, excluding the gunman.
