Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows allegedly has been subpoenaed by the special counsel investigating former President Donald Trump’s role in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and his efforts to alter the results of the 2020 election.
Meadows was served a subpoena in January by the office of special counsel Jack Smith, according to various news sources, for documents and testimony relating to the Capitol disturbance.
It was revealed last week that former Vice President Mike Pence was subpoenaed by Smith’s team as part of the same probe of the 76-year-old former president.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the demand for Meadows’ testimony and records precedes the subpoena issued to Pence.
Meadows refused efforts to compel him to testify in a probe by a special grand jury in Georgia into Trump’s plans to lose to Joe Biden in Georgia in 2020.
The former White House chief of staff unsuccessfully used executive privilege to avoid having to go before the grand jury.
Pence, who was present at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, is also anticipated to reject his subpoena on the grounds that, as Senate president, he was protected by the Constitution’s Speech or Debate clause throughout his time as vice president.
The clause prevents congressional representatives from being questioned in court regarding legislative acts.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) attempted to evade a subpoena using this strategy in Georgia, but was unsuccessful.
Smith, a seasoned prosecutor, was chosen by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November to oversee numerous investigations into Trump, including one connected to January 6 and the mishandling of secret information.
