Manchester United signed Antony from Ajax for a whopping £81.3 million

The fourth most expensive signing in Premier League history was made on Thursday when Manchester United finalised the acquisition of Antony from Ajax for a reported sum of £81.3 million.

The Brazilian international striker, 22, has agreed to a deal that runs through 2027 with an extra year’s option.

The cost includes prospective add-ons worth up to five million euros.

Antony stated in a statement posted on Manchester United’s website that “this is a great time in my career to be joining one of the most legendary teams in the world.”

His transfer cost broke the previous Eredivisie player record of 86 million euros set by Frenkie de Jong’s move from Ajax to Barcelona three years before.

Ironically, United’s major transfer target for this season was de Jong, but they were unable to sign him.

In nine senior games for Brazil, he scored twice for Ajax and Sao Paulo.

He will be reunited with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, who has previously taken defender Lisandro Martinez from the Dutch powerhouses to United.

Under me and my growth, playing for Erik ten Hag at Ajax was ideal, says Antony.

“His coaching and playing methods bring out the best in me, and I am intrigued by what he has shared with me about his goals and intentions for Manchester.

“My time at Ajax was amazing, and I will always be thankful for the faith they placed in me.

However, now that I am ready for the next challenge, I can’t wait to join my new team and contribute to the success of Manchester United,” he said.

The ambition of Antony to play for the team, despite not playing in the Champions League this season, pleased Manchester United Football Director John Murtough.

Anthony is one of the most exciting young players in European football, and Erik described him as having the ideal profile for the aggressive, spirited club he is assembling.

In terms of new hires since Hag took over, Antony joins Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro, a fellow Brazilian.

In addition, veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United is anticipated to sign as David de Gea’s backup.

United will play Leicester later on Thursday in an effort to win their third straight game after a disastrous start to the Premier League season.
