Man was jailed after his wife’s body was discovered in a septic tank in their yard

Police in Thohoyandou have detained a 38-year-old man after his wife’s death was discovered in a pit latrine filled with water in their yard at Mangodi Ha Sidou, barely one day after a domestic abuse case against the man was dropped.

The grisly finding was made on January 28, Saturday morning.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) reports that the couple had a poor relationship. The victim filed a domestic abuse complaint against the man, who was subsequently detained.

The man was out on bond and was scheduled to return to Thohoyandou Magistrate Court the following week.

According to police spokeswoman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the woman withdrew her lawsuit from court on January 27, 2023.

On Saturday morning, the suspect reportedly called the police to say that he could not locate his wife, but was shocked to find her dead in the pit toilet hole in their backyard.

“A preliminary police investigation at the scene led to the suspect’s arrest on murder charges,” Mojapelo added.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Police Commissioner of Limpopo, stated that this is another another instance of gender-based violence and femicide against vulnerable members of society.

“The deceased woman had faith in her husband that he would never again physically punish her. Hadebe stated, “We urge community members with domestic issues to seek assistance and to refrain from resorting to violence.”

The victim was identified as 33-year-old Lendelani Nengovela.

The husband is scheduled to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court on January 30, 2023.
