On Saturday, 11 February, Zolani Toyana, 23, of Site C, Cape Town, was allegedly stabbed to death by three females over a broken bottle of liquor.
According to City Press, Toyana and five female companions visited a tavern. Two of them left, while the remaining three remained.
Toyana reportedly agreed to purchase alcohol for the three females.
Once he was out of sight, one of the females said that she wanted to visit her boyfriend’s home. They took the booze without informing him and then departed.
Toyana pursued the girls after seeing that they had left the bar with alcoholic drinks.
“Apparently, he wanted to leave with one of the girls, but they refused. That’s when he took the bottle of alcohol, claiming that he had bought it, and he broke it. One of the girls was heard saying he was disrespecting them and they allegedly stabbed him in the neck and stomach with the bottleneck. They then pelted him with stones,” the report quoted Toyana’s friend as saying.
Medical staff pronounced Toyana dead at the location.
The police have opened a murder investigation.
The suspects are yet to be apprehended.
Tuesday, February 14, IOL reported that residents and Toyana’s friends marched to the Lingalethu police station to demand the arrest of the suspected murderers.
“It can’t be that three days after the incident, no one has been arrested. Zolani must get the justice he deserves and we want the case to be prioritised,” said a family member Naledi Nofemele as quoted by the report.
This is not the first occurrence of this kind in Zolani’s family. In 2019, nine men fatally stabbed his older brother, and they are still on the loose.
