The Gauteng Department of Education has stated that a man entered a school in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg, and was fatally shot. According to department spokesperson Steve Mabona, the event occurred at Kagiso Senior Secondary School on Friday, February 3, 2023.
“We can confirm that we are aware of a gunshot incident that allegedly occurred at Kagiso Senior Secondary School on 3 February 2023. According to information at our disposal, an unidentified individual allegedly entered the school through the main gate when it was remotely unlocked for a car to enter. “The guard assigned to the gate attempted to stop him, but he refused to comply,” Mabona said in a brief statement.
The man then rushed the Kagiso school administration building and demanded to see the principal. The man became violent after being informed that the principal was in a meeting and unable to speak with him.
He is accused of drawing a knife and stabbing an instructor in the hand. Afterward, another teacher fatally shot him,” Mabona continued.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the shooting at Kagiso Senior Secondary School. The event disrupted schooling since students had to be dismissed after becoming agitated upon learning about it.
As a result of the incident, the department has now provided counseling to the school.
“On Monday, February 6, 2023, our Psycho-Social Unit will be dispatched to the school to provide counseling to all affected students and teachers,” the department said.
The department has been under intense pressure to address the lack of safety in schools, especially in Gauteng, after dozens of cases were recorded each year.
