Malnourished single mother’s expenses top £2,000

After well-wishers contributed more than £2,000 in only a few hours to help feed a malnourished single mother’s children, she believes her faith in mankind has been restored.

Kelly Thomson, 43, disclosed last week that she had only been eating one meal a day to make sure she could still afford to feed her two children when she had really been hospitalised twice for malnutrition.

She claims she only has £40 a week to feed her family and worries that due to this winter’s inflation, she may have to turn to begging.

The Slough, Berkshire, resident, 43, made the decision to start a GoFundMe campaign this morning with a goal of only £50.

The mother-of-two said she was surviving on one meal a day so that she could afford food for her 11-year-old daughter (pictured) and 14-year-old son

With Ms Thomson stating that “a weight has been lifted,” the amount has already surpassed £2,000 in just a few short hours and is still rapidly rising.

Nearly 100 individuals have already contributed, and many of them have left the struggling mother of two heartfelt letters of encouragement, which she claimed left her speechless.

She also said that someone had offered to replace the worn-out school uniforms for both of her children, and another had promised to pay for her weekly grocery purchase.

The bids have been ridiculous, it’s just gorgeous, said Ms. Thomson of Slough.

“Since the news broke, I’ve received more than 100 texts.

“I can’t believe how kind people are.” My confidence in people has been restored.

I can now rest well knowing that, due to the contributions, we will be able to purchase food for at least a few weeks.

“I never dreamed or could have anticipated that this would happen!”

Ms. Thomson, a mother of a boy, 14, and a daughter, 11, said that in order to earn money for food, she was compelled to take the birthday presents for her kids to Cash Converters.

The tiny happiness on my son’s face when I told him he may be able to get his scooter back from the Cash Converters was great, she remarked today.

Ms Thomson said she is 'so grateful' for all the donations, which have already surpassed £2,000

I really appreciate everyone’s help, especially my children, and I wish I could thank each and every one of you in person. I’m really appreciative.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics issued on Wednesday, the UK’s inflation rate for July was 10.1%, far higher than experts’ expectations of 9.8%.

It increased from 9.4% the previous month, mostly due to rising gasoline and food expenses.

Since February 1982, when the measure was thought to have reached 10.4%, inflation has never been higher.

Ms. Thomson claims that even though her rent of £1,300 per month and a few other expenses are covered by her universal credit, she only has £160 per month left over to pay all other payments.

In a last-ditch effort to raise awareness of the debilitating inflation increases, the single mother of two this week revealed her tale in the media.

The 43-year-old, from Slough, Berkshire, said rising food prices have made it near impossible for her to feed herself as well as her son, 14, and daughter, 11

Since acquiring long-Covid in December 2020, when she was signed off from her work as a maid, she has been trying to make ends meet.

Due to the little food Ms. Thomson consumes, her doctor said that she dropped two stone and became “underweight.”

Because she cannot afford fresh food, she has twice ended herself in the hospital with malnutrition and had blood transfusions to restore her low iron levels.
