As part of a pay increase for all state MPs, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ annual compensation will go a little bit closer to $500,000.

Following a ruling by the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal, the yearly base, supplemental, and expenditure allowance wages of Victorian parliament members will increase 2.75 percent as of July 1.

That is slightly greater than the 2.5% raise given to MPs for this fiscal year. The premier’s yearly compensation package, which includes up to $58,435 in cost reimbursements, will climb to $464,918 with the same raise applied to all parliamentary office holders.

The most recent decision takes into account previous pay rises for Commonwealth, NSW, and Queensland MPs of two to 2.75 percent, as well as other variables such Victoria’s budgetary situation and economic developments, expected national inflation of 7%, and the 5.2% increase in the minimum wage.

According to VIRT, the tribunal “has concluded that the values of the basic income for Victorian MPs, and the supplementary salaries and expenditure allowance for specified parliamentary office holders, will increase by 2.75 percent for 2022/23.”

With the 2.75 percent increase, a Victorian MP’s base pay will increase by around $5200 from 2022–2023 to $192,115.

Mr. Andrews noted that under laws implemented in 2019 to independently monitor MPs’ compensation, his administration established VIRT.

He told reporters on Sunday, “We don’t establish our own compensation.”

Last year, he promised to donate his pay raise and more to charity, but he also promised not to put pressure on his fellow Labor lawmakers to do the same, as they did in 2020.

As for everyone else, they may form their own opinions, Mr. Andrews added, “Cath and I donate to many various groups and we typically do so without any fanfare or any show.”

Because the state was having such a difficult time these past few years, it was acceptable for us to make some form of special arrangements.

If she holds the position after the state election in November, his newly appointed deputy premier, Jacinta Allan, is eligible to receive a salary and benefit package of up to $395,757.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy would be eligible to recover up to $370,782 over the following 12 months, which is the same amount as a government minister.

The tribunal increased the amount that MPs can claim for electorate and motor vehicle costs in addition to a 2.75 percent salary boost and a general expense allowance, but it did not increase their maximum budget for international travel, commercial transportation, or parliamentary lodging.

As part of a thorough evaluation early the next year, the tribunal will continue to examine MP compensation.
