Thursday, the spokesperson for the Gauteng education department, Steve Mabona, was under pressure to appease parents who accused Laerskool Danie Malan of racism.

The Laerskool Danie Malan in Pretoria North has been accused of denying black pupils access to its grounds, resulting in heightened tensions outside the school.

Since then, Mabona has refuted the charges, stating that the department has accommodated students based on the school’s capacity and not their ethnicity.

“This is not the first time this has occurred. The same thing happened last year, with parents going outside and calling for an end to prejudice,” Mabona added.

“However, we had to accommodate as many students as possible based on the school’s capacity.”

The EFF criticized the alleged racism and isolation of black students at Laerskool Danie Malan in a statement released on Thursday.
