Liz Cheney has accepted an appointment to server a professor at the University of Virginia after losing rep seat

On Wednesday, the University of Virginia announced that former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has accepted a professorship at the university’s Center for Politics. Despite being a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump, Cheney lost her re-election bid in 2022 after being ousted by Harriet Hageman in the Republican primary, who was endorsed by Trump.

Cheney has previously expressed interest in running for president in 2024. In a press release, she stated that she looks forward to contributing to finding lasting solutions that strengthen democracy. As a Professor of Practice at the university, her duties will include giving lectures, participating in research, and serving as a guest lecturer in student seminars.

Cheney’s appointment is effective immediately and runs through the fall semester of 2023, with options to renew for additional years. University President Jim Ryan expressed his delight at Cheney’s decision to join the university, stating that the students will have an incredible opportunity to learn from her.

Cheney served as the representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. During the final days of Trump’s administration, she clashed with him and party leadership. In January 2021, she voted in favor of Trump’s second impeachment after the Capitol riot. As a result of her criticism of Trump, she was removed from her post as Republican Conference chairwoman, the third-highest position in the GOP Conference.

Cheney was named vice chairwoman of the House Jan. 6 committee in September 2021, joining then-Representative Adam Kinzinger (D-Ill.) as the only other Republican on the panel investigating Trump’s actions on the day of the Capitol riot.

Cheney has formed a political action committee called “The Great Task” that intends to oppose Trump’s efforts to reclaim the presidency. She has said that she plans to do “whatever it takes” to ensure Trump doesn’t serve a second term in the White House. In August 2021, she told NBC’s “Today” that running for president in 2024 is something she is thinking about.
