The South African Post Office (SAPO) has been placed under provisional liquidation, raising concerns about whether the liquidation will affect the beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants.

The Post Office has a R4 billion debt and was placed under liquidation following a successful court application by one of its creditors.

Contingency Plans in Place for SASSA Beneficiaries SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi has reassured the public that there are contingency plans in place to ensure that beneficiaries receive their due payments.

The COO of SASSA and the Post Office are scheduled to meet to iron out any hiccups and ensure that the beneficiaries receive their payments without any distress.

Minister’s Response Communications and Digital Technologies Minister, Mondli Gungubele, has requested that the Board and Management of SAPO provide him with a detailed account of the circumstances leading to the Post Office’s liquidation.

Gungubele also stated that the Post Office is a crucial government service platform that cannot afford to cease its operations.

He added that his department and the Post Office must work diligently to ensure the Post Office transforms into an independent and profitable business entity for the benefit of the country’s citizens.

Impact on Social Relief of Distress Grant In May 2022, the Post Office announced that it would no longer pay the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant but still pays out the old age, disability, or child grants.

The liquidation of the Post Office raises concerns about the impact it may have on the payments of these grants.

Commentary The liquidation of the South African Post Office is a concerning development, particularly for beneficiaries of SASSA grants who rely on the Post Office for payment.

It is reassuring to hear that SASSA has contingency plans in place to ensure beneficiaries receive their due payments.

It is now up to the Post Office to work with SASSA and other creditors towards favorable outcomes that will enable it to continue providing services to the citizens of South Africa.
