Sabri Lamouchi, the manager of Cardiff City, has made a statement regarding the young Welsh trio who are currently on the periphery of the squad. Mark Harris, Rubin Colwill, and Isaak Davies have been used sparingly since Lamouchi took the reins back in January and have struggled to make it onto the bench on many occasions.
While Harris played a significant role up until Lamouchi was appointed, both Colwill, aged 20, and Davies, aged 21, are considered to be two of the brighter academy prospects the club has developed in recent years, and their omissions have not gone unnoticed among supporters.
Lamouchi has changed formation and personnel since taking over and has opted for more experienced players and new signings.
Harris started the manager’s first game at Luton and came off the bench for a minute in the next game against Hull City, but has not been named in a matchday squad since.
Colwill has been afforded just two cameos off the bench, which have totalled 16 minutes’ worth of football, but was not named in five squads between those two outings. Isaak Davies has been given just five minutes off the bench against Middlesbrough.
However, the players who are being selected are doing the business, and Cardiff have won three of their last four games, opening a gap of six points to the three teams in the drop zone. Hence, Lamouchi’s selection cannot be questioned. Nevertheless, many are wondering what this selection policy means for the future, especially since Colwill and Davies are viewed as players who will play a significant part in the club’s fortunes in years to come.
Lamouchi must be commended for his candour, as he took no backward steps when asked about how he viewed the trio’s situation.
He stated that he is always honest with them and tells them the truth in a good way or in his way. When they play poorly, he tells them why and gives them a reason because he believes that it is unacceptable to say that it was terrible without providing any reason or explanation.
They can come to his office because his door is always open. He added that the first XI is always for a reason, the bench is always for a reason, and they are out of the team for a reason, and he has no problem telling the truth to all of them.
Lamouchi acknowledges that Cardiff will need the young players, whether in the coming months or further ahead. However, it appears to be a case of securing the club’s status as a Championship side next season before looking too far forward. If they gain a bit more breathing space, perhaps these talented prospects will be given their head once again.
