Princess Abiodun Oyefusi Calls for Governor’s Resignation

Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, the Labour Party’s Deputy gubernatorial candidate, has called for the resignation of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in the wake of a building collapse on First Avenue, Banana Island.

According to reports, this incident is only the latest in a series of building collapses in the highbrow Ikoyi area, raising concerns about the government’s oversight of construction.

In November 2021, a 21-storey building under construction on Gerard Road collapsed, killing the developer, Femi Osibona, and dozens of workers.

In September 2021, a seven-storey building under construction on Oba Idowu Abiodun Road in Oniru also collapsed, killing workers who passed the night.

In a statement made available to DAILY POST, Oyefusi decried the lack of constant monitoring of buildings, despite the huge budget allocated to the Ministry of Physical Planning.

The politician said it is “shameful and unreasonable” for the authorities not to have a database of locations where work is ongoing.

Oyefusi further claimed that the incessant collapse of buildings is proof of government incompetence, and Governor Sanwo-Olu is incapable of effective policies within the construction industry that will tame this menace.

Therefore, she demanded the Governor’s resignation, stating that Lagosians are tired and that the attitude of the All Progressives Congress, APC, administration has caused deaths and injuries.

Commentary

The recent building collapse in Banana Island has once again drawn attention to the need for effective oversight of construction activities in Lagos State.

Princess Abiodun Oyefusi’s call for the resignation of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reflects the frustration felt by many residents who have witnessed multiple incidents of building collapse, resulting in loss of life and property.

It is essential that the government takes proactive steps to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

This includes regular inspections of construction sites, strict enforcement of building codes, and the implementation of effective policies to regulate the construction industry.

As Princess Oyefusi rightly pointed out, the lack of a database of locations where work is ongoing is unacceptable.

The government must prioritize the safety of its citizens and ensure that all construction activities are carried out in compliance with regulations.
