Kimberley court suspect in bomb threat detained

A 51-year-old man who threatened to fuel-bomb the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court will be incarcerated throughout the holiday season.

He was arrested on Thursday and was charged with inciting violence against the Kimberley Court when he appeared in court early this week.

The suspect allegedly sent a threatening message on social media indicating his desire to torch the courthouse. The social media post trended and went viral.

Nomthandazo Mnisi, a spokesman for the Northern Cape Hawks, stated, “It is also alleged that he mailed gasoline-filled containers that will be used to bomb the court.”

The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team arrested the suspect with the assistance of Crime Intelligence, who discovered evidence at the suspect’s residence.

The bail application has been postponed until December 29.

The suspect was arrested earlier this year for breaking the windows of the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court. He was released on bail of R500.

“The defendant claimed his acts were motivated by rage after serving three months in jail for failing to appear in court on a separate charge in June 2020,” the NPA said in a statement.
