Unknown gunmen have released the kidnapped choir members of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Igan, Akure, Ondo state, who were abducted a week ago.

These choir members were initially abducted while en route to a funeral ceremony along the Ifon-Benin road.

Ransom Demand and Narrow Escape

The abductors had demanded a hefty N50 million ransom for the release of the remaining 17 victims after eight of the 25 initially abducted narrowly escaped from the kidnappers’ den the previous Saturday.

Ransom Payment Leads to Release

A church member spoke to reporters in Akure on Friday, revealing that the remaining victims were finally released by their abductors late Thursday night following the payment of ransom.

The church member disclosed that a significant sum of money was contributed by the church and the victims’ families to secure their release.

He added that the negotiating team from the church safely brought the victims back to the church premises in Akure at 11:47 pm.

Government Response and Call for Strengthened Laws

In response to the incident, the leadership of the Ondo State House of Assembly, led by Deputy Speaker Abayomi Akinruntan, visited the church and expressed their condolences.

Akinruntan described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized the need to revisit and strengthen existing kidnapping laws.

He stated that it was crucial to ensure the safety of lives and property in Ondo State.

Additionally, the House of Assembly intends to collaborate with security agencies to enhance security along the road, safeguarding travelers in and out of the state.

The Regional Superintendent of the church, Odubanjo Region, Pastor Benjamin Akande, expressed gratitude for the visit and support received during this challenging time.
