Italian Serie A club Sampdoria received a sinister warning from an unknown source

Italian football club, Sampdoria, received a threatening warning on Saturday when a pig’s head was delivered to its headquarters. The severed head was accompanied by a message, which was addressed to the former club president, Massimo Ferrero, and the current vice-president, Antonio Romei, warning that the “next heads will be yours”.

Police were called to the scene, and the club expressed “profound outrage and indignation in the face of yet another serious act of intimidation.”

Last month, a blank bullet was delivered to Sampdoria’s offices, along with threats against Ferrero and Edoardo Garrone, a previous owner of the club. The 71-year-old Ferrero has been accused of running down Sampdoria’s finances and refusing to sell the club to new owners capable of rescuing it from financial and sporting disaster.

Ferrero still controls Sampdoria via a family holding, but he resigned from his position after being arrested in 2021 on financial charges unrelated to football.

Other Italian teams have faced similar intimidation in the past. For example, in 2006, the sporting director of Palermo was sent a severed goat’s head, while in 1999, the president of Reggina received a bull’s head.
