Florida’s Attorney General, Ashley Moody, has issued a warning regarding the “Frankenstein” opioid, “nitazene compounds,” which she claims are 40 times more potent than fentanyl and are currently spreading throughout the United States.

She is requesting that Florida pass a law that adds nitazene compounds to the list of Schedule I controlled substances, which would signal that they have no acceptable medical use and are at high risk for abuse.

Nitazene compounds have been found in the state since at least 2020, and over 140 instances of them were recorded in 2022. So far in 2023, they have been discovered 34 times in Florida alone.

They have been discovered inside counterfeit pills and offered as liquids or powders. Nitazene compounds are often used in combination with fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost first spoke out about the compounds, saying they could be 40 times as powerful as fentanyl. They have been found in San Francisco and areas of the mid-Atlantic, with Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares confirming they were present in his state.

Moody is warning people that “one pill will kill” and that the drug can harm anyone of any age who ingests it. In 2022, 108,000 people in the US died from overdoses, with the number of overdose deaths hitting a new record high.

Fentanyl, which is 100 times more potent than morphine, was responsible for 75,000 deaths in 2021. Fentanyl is cut with other drugs to make them stronger, leading to overdoses.
