Walrus known as Thor appears in Breiðdalsvík, Iceland, 2 months after he was last spotted in the UK

The well-known walrus, Thor, who made headlines after appearing on UK beaches in November 2021, has been spotted in the Icelandic fishing town of Breiðdalsvík, almost two months after he was last seen in the UK.

Ellis Elisson, a fisherman who was supervising one of his boats, found Thor lounging on a floating dock at a harbour in the small town on Friday morning.

Initially, they were wary of the walrus, but after realizing that all he wanted to do was rest, they moved closer while maintaining a safe distance. Thor remained resting on the floating dock, unfazed by their presence, and Ellis took a few photos.

The news of Thor’s reappearance in Iceland reached the UK where the British Divers Marine Life Rescue confirmed it was definitely Thor after matching markings from the pale patches on the walrus’ fore flippers.

Thor was last seen in Blyth, Northumberland, on January 2nd, having previously been spotted in Southampton, Scarborough, and Calshot Beach, Hampshire.

After leaving the Arctic circle earlier this winter, he is believed to have traveled from as far as Canada before he was first spotted in Zeeland, in the southeast corner of the Netherlands on November 6th. Thor’s reappearance has drawn the attention of the media and walrus fans worldwide.

Although Thor was causing havoc for Scarborough’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, local officials canceled the town’s fireworks to avoid disturbing the mammal, which is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Thor finally returned to the water on New Year’s Day, cheered on by the locals. It is believed that Thor left his home in the Arctic circle on this winter’s journey of approximately 3,000 miles. He is thought to be between three and five years old, and it is unknown where he will turn up next.
