Novak Djokovic stated on Tuesday that the reception he received in Australia was more than he could have hoped for, and that the positive energy would be reflected in his tennis this month as he aims to win his 22nd Grand Slam championship.
A year after being expelled for refusing to be vaccinated against Covid-19, the Serbian tennis great, who will vie for a tenth Australian Open title, is back in the nation.
The government has already removed the three-year ban, and Djokovic made a successful return at the Adelaide International, defeating Frenchman Constant Lestienne 6-3, 6-2.
On Monday, when the 35-year-old played in a losing doubles match, he was greeted with a warm reception and received similar treatment on a crowded center court.
“It’s wonderful to return. My first match being played in front of a packed house was certainly a pleasant surprise. “Lots of love and support,” he remarked at a press conference.
This clearly pushed me and allowed me to express myself on the court in the greatest way possible.
“Many Serbian flags, I know the Serbian community in Adelaide is large, but I did not expect so many people to attend. I am really grateful.”
After a high-stakes court struggle over his visa status, Djokovic was forced on an aircraft on the eve of the Australian Open last year, which overshadowed the competition.
It left a sour taste in his mouth, but he harbored “no grudges” and had gone on.
“Coming to Australia this year was unlike any other year because of the events of the previous year,” he added.
“Yet at the same time, 12 months ago is also a very long time ago; I’ve moved on and am looking ahead.
“There is no reason to concentrate on… What you focus on is what you become; if I focus on the bad, I will become negative, so I do not wish to do so.
Additionally, a tennis player gets suspended after a positive doping test at the US Open.
“I’m not bitter; I’m here to play tennis, to enjoy sports, and to spread positive energy.”
He continued, “People have been incredibly kind and generous with me from day one.” So far, it’s been a terrific experience.”
Djokovic was also pleased with his early-season play, which augurs well for his Australian Open campaign at Melbourne Park beginning January 16.
Obviously, the first match after a lengthy layoff is difficult, as you do not know how to begin.
“I’m delighted I was able to accomplish everything successfully; I was focused and composed from the beginning to the end.”
