There are ‘good signals’ that Novak Djokovic’s three-year ban on entering Australia will be lifted, allowing him to compete at the upcoming Australian Open in January.
The 35-year-old Serbian was deported from Australia prior to this year’s Grand Slam competition on the grounds that his objection to the COVID-19 vaccination posed a threat to the country’s stability.
The former world number one stated that he hoped to hear from the authorities soon on his request to have his three-year visa ban lifted.
“When it comes to Australia, there are some promising indicators, but they are unofficial,” he said in an interview with Serbia’s Sportal.
“We are speaking via my Australian attorneys. In fact, they are in contact with the authorities responsible for my situation.
“I want to receive an answer within the next two weeks – whatever that response may be, although of course I am hoping for a positive one – so that I have sufficient time to prepare for the season’s start in Australia, assuming that start is to occur.”
The Australian Department of Home Affairs has consistently emphasized its refusal to comment on particular instances.
In July, Australia eliminated a provision that required international travelers to register their Covid vaccination status. Djokovic remains unvaccinated.
Former Home Affairs Minister and opposition member Karen Andrews stated earlier this month that waiving Djokovic’s ban would be a “slap in the face” for Australians who were vaccinated.
Earlier last month, Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley stated that Djokovic would be welcome in January if he could obtain a visa, but Tennis Australia was unable to negotiate on his behalf.
Djokovic, who is now ranked seventh in the world, said that he would conclude the 2018 season at the Paris Masters and ATP Finals in Turin, and that he would like to begin the 2023 season in Australia.
