Harry tells trauma expert Gabor Maté of his struggles to be his ‘authentic true self’ growing up

In a conversation with trauma expert Gabor Maté, the Duke of Sussex revealed his struggles to be his “authentic true self” while growing up.

He explained that he felt pressure to conform to what was expected of him and that whenever he attempted to venture towards being his true self, he was discouraged from doing so.

Maté quoted a section of Harry’s book in which he expressed his frustration with his family’s unwillingness to “break free and live” and asked him if he had been able to do so.

Harry responded that he had been able to do so and felt “incredibly free” after leaving the Royal Family, saying that he had taken a great weight off his shoulders.

Maté observed that Harry’s efforts to become more aware had resulted in his becoming increasingly distant from his own family.

The conversation between Harry and Maté centered on dealing with loss and the importance of personal healing. During the livestream Q&A, Harry disclosed that he was diagnosed with PTSD after Princess Diana’s death.

Despite this, he said, “I don’t see myself as the victim,” indicating that he was not looking for pity.
