Prince Harry is set to have a public conversation with trauma expert Gabor Maté, who has a controversial history of anti-Israel sentiments. Maté has previously compared Hamas terrorists to those who rose up from the Warsaw Ghetto and has even congratulated individuals named to the Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s top ten antisemites of the year for making the list.
Despite his past, Maté will join the prince for a livestreamed discussion about “living with loss and the importance of personal healing.”
Maté is a Holocaust survivor, and Harry lost his mother, Princess Diana, at a young age. However, Maté’s work is based on his experience in the Holocaust, and he has become virulently opposed to the Jewish state of Israel.
He defended Palestinian rocket fire at citizens of Israel and called Hamas “nothing compared to the terrorism of the Israeli government.”
Maté has also appeared on Russell Brand’s podcast, where he described Israel as “the longest ethnic-cleansing operation in the 20th and 21st centuries.” He further described Gaza as “the world’s largest outdoor prison.” In 2019, Maté defended disgraced former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has been accused of antisemitism.
Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre has criticized the decision to have Maté appear with Prince Harry. He said, “whoever made the arrangements to have this individual appear with Prince Harry, did him no favors.” Rabbi Cooper also noted that Maté’s worldview sets him apart from 99% of world Jewry.
It is unclear whether Prince Harry is personally aware of Maté’s controversial views. If he knew about them and still chose to have Maté on the show, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre would criticize the prince for such an inappropriate choice.
