Father of woman who fell to her death from 7th-story penthouse in Belgium said she was pushed

John Hove, the father of a woman who died after falling from a penthouse window in Belgium in 2015, has revealed that he never liked his son-in-law, Navy Lt. Craig R. Becker, and always believed that Becker had killed his daughter, Johanna ‘Hanna’ Hove-Becker.

In a recent interview with Dateline NBC, Hove spoke about the seven years he spent trying to disprove the authorities’ initial claims that his daughter had committed suicide. Becker was eventually charged with Hove-Becker’s murder in 2022, and a two-hour report on the case will air on Dateline NBC on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Hove-Becker’s death was initially believed to be a suicide, but her family and friends never accepted that explanation. In the spring of 2022, a U.S. military jury in Belgium found Becker guilty of premeditated murder, assault consummated by a battery, and conducting unbecoming an officer and a gentleman in connection with Hove-Becker’s death. Becker was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole and a dismissal from the service.

Hove-Becker was a psychologist who moved to Mons, Belgium in 2013 with her husband, who was serving at NATO headquarters in Brussels at the time. They had one daughter together, Isabelle, who was born in 2014. Becker maintains that his wife’s death was a suicide because of mental illness, but his appeal is pending.

Hove has not been able to see his granddaughter, as Becker retains parental rights while his appeal is pending. Hove said he does not even know where Isabelle lives and that he has not seen her in eight years.

Belgian officials initially concluded that Hove-Becker’s death was a suicide, but Hove questioned that conclusion after noticing marks on the walls outside the bedroom window from which his daughter allegedly jumped. Friends and family also questioned the investigation, leading Belgian authorities to charge Becker with Hove-Becker’s murder.

An investigation by Belgian authorities, including a crime scene reconstruction, later concluded that Hove-Becker had been pushed, rather than having jumped, out the window.
