FARMWORKER NABBED FOR ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER

On Thursday, July 14, police detained a 39-year-old Free State farmworker on suspicion of attempted murder. According to reports, the event happened on a farm in Trompsburg on Monday.

A 62-year-old woman was attacked by a farmworker on Monday at around 17:00, according to Warrant Officer Loraine Earle of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“She was inside the house when she allegedly came across a farmworker going through drawers.  Upon seeing her, the suspect grabbed, strangled and assaulted her then fled the scene,” said Earle.

For medical attention, the woman was brought to a hospital in Bloemfontein. A multidisciplinary team from Trompsburg, Springfontein, and Colesberg initiated a manhunt for the suspect while an attempted murder case was opened for investigation.

On Thursday, the farmworker was taken into custody in the Colesberg neighbourhood. On Monday, July 18, he is scheduled to appear before the Trompsburg Magistrate’s Court on a charge of attempted murder.
