Environment Secretary announces the appointment of Alan Lovell DL as the new chair of the Environment Agency

Today, July 19, George Eustice, the Environment Secretary, announced the appointment of Alan Lovell DL as the new chair of the Environment Agency.

George Eustice, Environment Secretary, said:

“Alan will bring a wide range of experience, enthusiasm and leadership to the role and I am delighted he will be the next Chair of the Environment Agency.

“His knowledge and experience will be a real asset as we work together to improve and enhance the natural environment.”

Alan Lovell commenting on his appointment said:

“It is a great honour to be appointed Chair of the Environment Agency.

“This is a vital organisation, full of excellent committed people striving to do their best for the nation’s flood defences, for the environment as a whole, and in the battle against climate change. It will be a privilege to join them and to try to make a difference.”

“I am delighted to welcome Alan as the next Chair of the Environment Agency. He brings a wealth of experience from his time in business and his time as Chair of the Consumer Council for Water.”

The appointment comes after a joint report by the EFRA and EAC committees on Alan’s suitability for the position was released on July 8 and a public meeting with the committees was held on July 5. Following a thorough selection process that adhered to the Ministerial Governance Code on Public Appointments, Mr. Lovell was chosen.

The position will be taken up by Mr. Lovell on September 26, 2022. The second term of Emma Howard Boyd CBE as chair of the Environment Agency will end in September 2022.

Biography of Alan Lovell:

Alan has served as the chair of both for-profit and nonprofit organisations. In addition to serving as Senior Independent Director of SIG plc and Chair of Safestyle UK plc, he is currently Chairman of the Interserve Group Ltd.

He served as the CEO of six businesses during his professional career, including Infinis, Jarvis, Costain, and Dunlop Slazenger.

Aside from leading the University of Winchester and the Mary Rose Trust, Alan served as the Consumer Council for Water’s chair for four years.
