Prime Minister announces the appointment of Mr Jonathan Hellewell, L.V.O., as the Prime Minister’s Appointments Secretary

Following the retirement of Richard Tilbrook, C.V.O., at the end of June, the Prime Minister has announced that he has appointed Mr. Jonathan Hellewell, L.V.O., to be the Prime Minister’s Appointments Secretary. Mr Tilbrook will continue to serve as Clerk to the Privy Council on a part-time basis and will be in charge of the appointment of Lord- Lieutenants.

In addition to participating in meetings of the Crown Nominations Commission, Mr. Hellewell will collaborate with the Archbishops’ Appointments Secretary on consultations for diocesan bishop and Crown deanery appointments.

In the Cabinet Office, Mrs. Helen Dimmock will continue to oversee select deanery appointments as well as parochial appointments where the Crown or Lord Chancellor serves as patron.

Since the end of January, Mr. Hellewell has held the position of Director of Information and Honours in the Cabinet Office, much like Richard Tilbrook, who oversaw the honours system before becoming the Appointments Secretary.

Prior to this, Mr. Hellewell served as the Prime Minister’s Faith Adviser and served as Head of the Civil Society Unit in the Policy Unit at Number 10 Downing Street under Prime Ministers Johnson and May.

He also managed the Lambeth Trust, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s private charity, and spent eight years as HRH The Prince of Wales’ assistant private secretary.

In 2015, the Queen bestowed upon him the honorary title of Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order.
