Marcus Rashford scored and paid tribute to his deceased teammate.
On Tuesday, Rashford, a standout on England’s 2022 World Cup soccer team, scored two goals in England’s 3-0 victory over Great Britain foe Wales.
After scoring his first goal, he kneeled on the field, closed his eyes, and gestured to the heavens. Later, he described the homage he was paying.
Rashford told reporters following the game, “Unfortunately, I lost a friend a few of days ago.” “He has fought cancer for quite some time, so I’m glad I was able to score for him. He has always been a huge supporter of mine, and I’m really glad he came into my life.”
After defeating Wales, drawing with the United States 0-0, and defeating Iran 6-2, England has advanced to the round of 16. Senegal is their opponent on Sunday afternoon.
Rashford responded to a question regarding the happiest moment of his career by discussing the team’s championship aspirations.
“I believe that winning trophies has always made me the happiest on the field,” he said. “I believe the team’s ambition is quite admirable. We possess a balance of qualities. We have a very strong team that is certainly capable of contending for the tournament title. I hope we can build on this performance, continue to improve, continue scoring goals, and continue to demonstrate our qualities.”
Since 2015, Rashford has played professionally for Manchester United.
