Christian Pulisic riles USMNT after World Cup goal injury

The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team got wild back at the hotel after defeating Iran, 1-0, in their final game of the 2022 World Cup group stage to progress to the knockout stage.

Videos released by the USMNT’s Twitter account showed the players yelling and celebrating back at the hotel lobby — including star striker Christian Pulisic, who scored the winning goal in the game (and hurt himself in the process) (and injured himself in the process).

Pulisic, wearing the squad’s red- and blue-splattered white warmup jersey, is seen capturing the ruckus as the team enters the foyer, with loud yells resonating throughout the room. As Tim Weah, who scored the team’s other goal in the group stage against Wales, steps in, he sees Pulisic recording and approaches his teammate to give him a hug.

To Pulisic’s credit, he still manages to keep shooting amid the pandemonium.

The USMNT concluded the group stage with five points and in second place in Group B — setting up a Round of 16 meeting with Netherlands. England also moved out of Group B, with dominating wins over Wales and Iran wedged around the scoreless game with the US.

The Americans’ success did not come without a price. On his game-winning goal, Pulisic looked to rush into Iran goalie Alireza Beiranvand. He played for a few minutes going into halftime but was pulled out for Brenden Aaronson to begin the second half.

After the game, Pulisic was diagnosed with a “pelvic contusion” and was listed as day-to-day; however, coach Gregg Berhalter indicated that the star would “hopefully” play against the Netherlands on Saturday. An photograph of Pulisic cheering from the hospital spread, and he reportedly left the facility in time to celebrate with his teammates.

Weston McKennie, a midfielder, said, “I sent him a text and checked on him, and he said, ‘You can be sure I’ll be ready on Saturday.’”

The Netherlands game is slated for Saturday, December 3 at 10:00 a.m. ET.
