E. Jean Carroll’s Obscure 1980s Book Soars in Price Amidst Trump Defamation Trial, Selling for Thousands

Trump Defamation Trial and E. Jean Carroll’s Book Surge

In the recent defamation case filed by writer E. Jean Carroll against Donald Trump, his attorney brought attention to Carroll’s little-known 1980s book, “Female Difficulties.”

The attorney’s attempt to highlight Carroll’s past writings on “smut stars” during the trial did not succeed, but it triggered a significant surge in the demand for used copies of the book.

Used Copies Fetching Thousands on Online Platforms

Following the trial mention, used copies of “Female Difficulties” began fetching thousands of dollars.

On Friday, one copy was listed for approximately $2,141 on AbeBooks, with another available on Amazon for $999.99. The unexpected surge in demand led to a rapid depletion of available copies.

Social Media Buzz and Endorsement

New Yorker writer Emily Nussbaum, prompted by the trial’s mention, purchased a copy of “Female Difficulties” and tweeted about the book’s quality.

She praised the 1985 work, blurbed by authors Hunter Thompson and Richard Price, as a great read, and highlighted the $80 online purchase as a worthwhile investment.

E. Jean Carroll’s Legal Battles and Literary Career

While E. Jean Carroll is currently known for her legal battles with Trump, she initially built her career as an advice columnist with the “Ask E. Jean” column in Elle magazine.

Her 2019 nonfiction book, “What Do We Need Men For?: A Modest Proposal,” gained attention for its entertaining and provocative content.

Sexual Assault Allegations Against Trump and Previous Defamation Case

Carroll gained widespread recognition for detailing her alleged sexual assault by Trump in the 1990s, leading to a defamation lawsuit against him.

In May 2023, a jury found Trump liable for defamation and sexual abuse in a separate case, awarding Carroll $5 million in damages.

The ongoing defamation case focuses on determining additional damages for comments made by Trump in 2019.

Differential Impact on Carroll’s Books

Despite the surge in demand for “Female Difficulties,” not all of Carroll’s books are experiencing a similar boost.

Copies of her 2019 book, “What Do We Need Men For?,” are currently available on Amazon for as little as $3.51 each.
