Drunk mum dies after crashing her car into tree the night she passed exams to become a paramedic

Sarah Smith, a young mother and army veteran, tragically died in a car accident on the night of October 14, 2022. Sarah had been celebrating passing her paramedic examinations prior to getting into her Audi A1 while significantly intoxicated.

Her blood alcohol reading was almost three times the legal limit for driving, and marks on the road and grassed area indicated that she had not attempted to brake after her car left the road.

As she drove around the right-hand bend in West Paddock, Leyland, heading towards Tesco, Sarah lost control of her car and drove across a grassed area before smashing into a tree.

Firefighters had to cut her out of the car, and she was taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital. Despite surgeons carrying out an operation to try to repair her heavily damaged liver, she was pronounced dead the following day.

At an inquest held at Preston Coroner’s Court, collision investigator PC Brendan Williams revealed that an examination of Sarah’s car found no defects, and she had been wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. There were no witnesses, but CCTV footage from a nearby property showed the latter stage of the collision.

PC Williams concluded that the vehicle had just negotiated a right-hand bend and appeared to continue to turn right before leaving the road.

There was no attempt to return back to the carriageway, and no evidence suggested anything other than driver error. PC Williams was provided details of a toxicology test which revealed that Sarah had been significantly intoxicated at the time of the crash.

A post mortem CT scan revealed that Sarah’s liver was shattered and in multiple parts, and the cause of death was given as traumatic liver injury. The coroner returned a conclusion of road traffic collision, adding that Sarah had consumed alcohol before getting into her vehicle.

Following Sarah’s death, friends raised more than £6,000 to help her husband Peter pay for ‘the send-off she deserves’. Pauline Evans set up the fundraiser on GoFundMe, stating that Sarah was a beautiful soul who was selfless, kind, and a great mum.

She served in the army for 10 years and was the life and soul of the party with an amazing sense of humour. Sarah’s death has left her two boys without a mum, and the funds raised will go towards giving her the send-off she deserves and supporting her family.
