Radio DJ Pat Sharp has lost his job after making a crude joke about a woman’s breasts at an awards show, reducing her to tears.
The incident occurred while Sharp, who has hosted a show on Greatest Hits Radio since 2019, was the celebrity guest host at the Conference News Agency Awards in London.
As he handed events boss Lizzy Eaton a T-shirt, he made a remark about ‘getting on your t**s’, which Eaton said made her feel ‘violated’.
Sharp’s contract was due to expire at the end of March, but the station confirmed that he will not return with immediate effect.
The incident occurred on stage in front of 400 of Eaton’s colleagues and peers. Eaton, who had been given a T-shirt featuring an old photo of Sharp, captioned ‘Pat Sharp – AS SEEN ON FUN HOUSE – LOOKING SHARP SINCE 1982’, threw the shirt back at Sharp and walked off the stage in tears.
Afterward, she posted on LinkedIn, expressing how she felt publicly humiliated, belittled, and objectified. Eaton also mentioned that she had worked hard to earn her reputation, which was undermined by Sharp’s comment.
Sharp has since apologized and said that he made a joke on stage that was not well received. He apologized at the event to anyone who was offended and personally apologized to Eaton.
The event organizers have also apologized, which Eaton said she has accepted, but she added that she feels sad, dirty, and violated.
A peer of Eaton’s who attended the awards called Sharp out publicly after his lewd comment.
The peer commended Eaton for standing with grace and dignity and handling the situation with admirable strength.
Eaton has become an inspiration to young women in the events industry.
Despite the apologies, the incident has left a lasting impact on Eaton, who said that the shame and embarrassment she feels will be with her for quite some time.
