Coal Authority board announce the appointment of a new non-executive director

We are pleased to announce that Bev Smith will assume her position as Non-executive Director of the Coal Authority in April 2023.

Bev is the current head of the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission Wales, an independent organization supported by the Welsh Government that reviews electoral systems to ensure effective and convenient local governance in Wales.
In addition, she works for the Independent Remuneration Panel Wales, which determines the remuneration for main, community, and town councils, national parks, and fire and rescue authorities, so contributing to a vibrant, healthy, and diversified democracy.
Formerly, she served as a local government chief executive in the East Midlands of England, where she specialized in social and economic development and emergency planning.
Bev Smith, Non-executive Director of the Coal Authority beginning in April 2023, declared:

I am pleased to add the position of Non-Executive Director of the Coal Authority to my resume. I was born and raised in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, and have a firsthand awareness for the significance of our coal mining heritage, as well as a desire and dedication to continue supporting those areas touched by mining, addressing disparities, and enhancing the quality of life.
My experience in delivering economic and social regeneration schemes, emergency planning, and strategic leadership, as well as my work with key stakeholders throughout Wales, aligns closely with the Coal Authority’s key areas of work to improve the future of people and the environment in mining areas.
