Chelsea will sell Mason Mount in the summer if he fails to agree a contract extension

Negotiations between player and club have been ongoing since the start of the season, as Chelsea seeks to secure a long-term deal with Mount, similar to the one offered to teammate Reece James in September.

While Mount desires to stay with the club, he is seeking a salary commensurate with his first-team importance, hoping to match that of fellow academy graduate James. However, reports indicate that Chelsea is hesitant to agree to these terms.

Mount’s current contract expires in July 2024, and negotiations are not expected to continue beyond the end of the current season. According to The Athletic, if Mount does not sign an extension in the coming months, Chelsea will look to sell him in order to avoid losing him for free in 2024.

Several top clubs, including Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool, are reportedly monitoring Mount’s contract situation and may try to acquire him if he becomes available.

Despite a disappointing season in which he has only scored three goals in 31 matches, Mount still has supporters in the form of Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter and Chelsea’s match-going fans.

However, his poor form has made dropping him from the team less controversial than in the past, especially given the numerous attacking options available to Chelsea. Nevertheless, Chelsea is reportedly confident in its ability to keep Mount, despite the ongoing standoff.
