Tony Gonsolin and the Dodgers agree to a two-year, $6.65M contract

Tuesday, All-Star pitcher Tony Gonsolin and the Los Angeles Dodgers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $6.65 million, two-year contract.

Gonsolin receives $3,250,000 this year and $3,450,000 in 2024.

In the second season, his compensation can increase by up to $3 million based on a points system that awards him one point for each start or relief appearance of 3 1/3 innings: $500,000 for 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, and 28 points, respectively. In addition, the 2024 compensation would climb by $1,125,000 for winning the Cy Young Award this year, $625,000 for placing second or third, and $500,000 for placing fourth or fifth.

On January 13, the parties exchanged wage proposals, with Gonsolin requesting a raise from $720,000 last season to $3.4 million this year and the Dodgers offering $3 million.

During his breakout season last year, the 28-year-old right-handed pitcher went 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 24 appearances. With an 11-0 record and a 2.02 ERA in the first half, Gonsolin won his first All-Star selection. He concluded with the highest winning % (.941) in the history of the franchise.

Gonsolin has spent portions of four seasons with the Dodgers since being taken in the ninth round out of Saint Mary’s College in 2016. In 59 career games, he is 26-6 with a 2.51 earned run average.

During the season-shortened 2020 World Series, he helped the Dodgers win.
