Esmael Malude Ramos Nangy, a Mozambican man accused of being a kidnapping kingpin on the run, has had his case postponed to allow the state to seek a direction from the director of public prosecutions and complete the extradition procedure.
Monday, Nangy appeared before the Thembisa magistrates court on various kidnapping allegations allegedly committed in Mozambique.
He was caught after a multi-disciplinary task force, acting on an arrest order and request from the Mozambican government, swooped down on him at a posh Centurion estate over the weekend.
Several things, according to the police, were also taken during the operation.
“In his possession, the team discovered a licensed 9mm firearm, 14 9mm cartridges, five cellphones, multiple bank cards for South African banks, and multiple SA and Mozambique sim cards,” police added.
Calvin Maile, the defense attorney, stated in court that his client had no prior convictions or current charges against him. Nonetheless, the state reiterated that it will oppose bail considering the gravity of the charges against the defendants.
Maile told the journalists outside the court that his team would resist the extradition request and that Nangy was unaware of an arrest order issued on July 18, 2022, according to the court.
Maile confirmed that his client, a transport entrepreneur who operates between South Africa and Mozambique, is not on the lam and has permanent status in South Africa.

Nangy was remanded to police custody and is scheduled to return to court on Monday.
