The “kidnapping kingpin” of Mozambique is back in court on Monday

On Monday, Esmael Malude Ramos Nangy, a Mozambican accused of multiple kidnappings, will make his second court appearance in Thembisa.

Last week, Nangy’s case was postponed to allow the state to seek guidance from the director of public prosecutions and complete the extradition procedure. According to a police report, the 50-year-old suspect was apprehended in a posh Centurion, Pretoria, neighborhood.

During the operation, the police seized a licensed 9mm pistol, 14 9mm cartridges, five cellphones, multiple South African bank cards, and numerous South African and Mozambican sim cards.

The national police spokeswoman, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, stated that Nangy was seized on the basis of an arrest warrant and an extradition request from the government of Mozambique.

“In July of last year, we received an arrest warrant and an extradition request from the government of Mozambique, which indicated that a wanted suspect may be in the country,” said Mathe.

Nangy’s attorney Calvin Maile stated after his client’s previous court appearance that the defense team hoped his client would be granted bail, explaining that Nangy is a transport businessman operating between South Africa and Mozambique, is not on the run, and has permanent residency in South Africa.
