Car runs into crowds in Berlin, leaving people dead and injured

A car crashed into crowds near a church in Berlin, killing at least one person and injuring up to 30 more.

On Wednesday morning, a silver Renault collided with pedestrians on Rankestrasse, a busy shopping and cafe area in western Berlin.

The car was lodged in the front of a shop, adjacent to outdoor café tables, with what seemed to be blood on the sidewalk, according to images from the scene.

Another image shows police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks stationed at the top of the road, adjacent to Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

The driver has been apprehended, however it remains unclear whether the accident was intentional.

‘A man is thought to have collided with a gathering of people.’ ‘Whether it was an accident or a planned act is yet unknown,’ officials said.

The crash occurred near Breitscheidplatz in Berlin’s major shopping center, which was the site of a 2016 Christmas market attack in which 11 people were killed.
