Calls for Traffic Calming Measures on Dangerous Road After 19 Cars Written Off

Three neighbours living on a busy road in south Wales have written off 19 vehicles in the past decade as they say drivers keep crashing into them.

James Crowley and his family have lost 10 cars while living in Chepstow Road in Newport, while next door neighbour Andrew Griffiths and his family have reported seven trashed vehicles.

A third neighbour, Gerald Carter, 89, has lost two cars including one which nearly ended up in his lounge, Wales Online reports.

On Sunday evening, Mr Crowley and Mr Griffiths’ cars were hit in another collision – and they have ramped up calls for the local authority to implement traffic management measures.

All three neighbours have voiced their frustration at their council’s inaction over speeding cars on a part of the road near the Man of Gwent pub.

Mr Griffiths said: ‘It’s unbelievable. We’ve lost seven cars in roughly the last ten years. We lose out every time, it always costs us more money.

Our insurance goes up even though it’s a no fault claim.

We’re working class families and have worked all our lives. We try to get the most suitable car for us at the price we can afford but every time it ends up costing us more money.

‘We need to see some sort of traffic calming in between our houses and the Man of Gwent pub – whether that be rumble strips or a central reservation for example – something to alert the drivers.’

The father-of-two said drivers often ‘nod off’ when coming off the M4 at the Colda junction before slamming into cars in the residential street.

Mr Carter also voiced fears there may be a ‘fatality’ on the road before any direct action is taken to calm traffic.

As a result of the crashes, Mr Crowley said his insurance has gone up and estimates he has lost £3,000 every time there has been a crash on one of his cars.

Mr Crowley added: ‘More and more so I am worrying about someone being hit rather than a car. We’ve had all sorts but it’s mainly people who fall asleep at the wheel.’

The trio will attend a residents’ meeting with local councillors and member of the Welsh Senedd John Griffiths on Friday.
