Cabinet reviews G20 summit

Cabinet asserts that the G20 Leaders’ Summit discussions support the country’s primary aims of eliminating poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

On November 15 and 16, 2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the 17th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

The summit brought together world leaders in an attempt to find solutions to a variety of global issues.

“The envisaged solutions include increasing multilateral cooperation for the recovery of the global economy, bringing stability to the global financial system, promoting long-term sustainable growth, and strengthening global economic governance,” Minister in The Presidency Mondli Gungubele said during a media briefing on the outcomes of this week’s Cabinet meeting.

Under Indonesia’s G20 presidency, the summit’s theme was “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.”

In addition to participating in working sessions on health, food, and energy security, President Ramaphosa attended a number of bilateral talks with key trading partners.

Support for 1.5 degree Celsius target

In the meantime, Cabinet has voiced its support for the requests made at the ongoing COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, for countries to remain on track to fulfill the Paris Agreement target of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“Our support for the 1.5 degree Celsius goal is of the utmost importance to South Africa as an African and developing nation that is extremely sensitive to the environmental, social, and economic repercussions of climate change,” Gungubele said.

Cabinet further approved the Africa Group’s call on wealthy nations to honor their pledges and commitments made under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

These include a demand for wealthier nations to take the lead in lowering emissions and the provision of financial resources to developing nations for their own climate action.

Exercise caution during rainy circumstances

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has urged the public to exercise caution during inclement weather, especially thunderstorms.

Gungubele stated that the government and the South African Weather Service will continue to offer severe weather information based on current observations and forecasts.

“It is urged that individuals do not walk, swim, or drive through swiftly rushing floodwater. You could get swept away if you attempt to cross a flooded region due to the high currents.

“Ensure your children’s safety and their ability to travel safely at all times,” Gungubele advised.
