Cox will play the role of James Tyrone, the patriarch of the Tyrone family in the autobiographical play which explores themes of love, hate, addiction, betrayal and the fragility of family bonds.

The play, regarded by many as the greatest American play of the 20th century, is Cox’s first West End role in almost a decade.

Joining Cox in the production are award-winning actress Patricia Clarkson, known for her work in “Sharp Objects” and “Easy A”, who will play the matriarch Mary Tyrone, and Alex Lawther from “The End Of The F***ing World” as Edmund, her younger son.

Daryl McCormack, who recently appeared in “Good Luck To You, Leo Grande” alongside Emma Thompson, will play the son James Jr, while Louisa Harland from “Derry Girls” will play the role of Cathleen, a maid.

The play will be directed by Jeremy Herrin, who praised the cast and the play’s relevance in modern times, saying “A great play is always relevant and Long Day’s Journey Into Night is, it’s often argued, the greatest play of the 20th century.”

He added that he anticipates a “feast of fine acting and vivid performances” in what he hopes will be a high-definition production.
