Boston Celtics slips down the table after Knicks defeat

The Boston Celtics’ three-game trip came to a close on Monday night with a defeat to the New York Knicks.

The first quarter was the only occasion all season that the Celtics scored fewer than 20 points, with only 15 points being their total. They reduced the Knicks’ 20-point advantage to just 10 points in the third quarter, but the advantage was short-lived as New York handed Boston its first loss following the All-Star break, 109-94.

Only a short while had passed after Jayson Tatum was dismissed from a game for the first time in his career before the Boston Celtics lost their hold on the top NBA position.

With 22 points while sitting on the bench, Malcolm Brogdon led the Celtics in scoring. Marcus Smart scored 19 points after that, and Jayson Tatum scored 14 points before being removed from the game late in the fourth quarter after receiving his second technical charge. Jaylen Brown wasn’t playing because of personal issues.

With 23 points combined, Julius Randle and Immanuel Quickly led the Knicks to victory. Jalen Brunson contributed 17 and had the highest game+21 rating.

With a record of 44-18 overall after their loss, the Boston Celtics are now a percentage point behind the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA standings. When they come home on Wednesday to face the Cleveland Cavaliers, they’ll be looking to get their momentum back.
