‘Barbie’ Teaser Trailer: Margot Robbie Is All Dolled Up In Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Film

Greta Gerwig teaches children about Stanley Kubrick in the first Barbie trailer, which debuted on Friday and can be viewed in the player above.

After Thursday night’s early screenings of Avatar: The Way of Water, news rapidly spread that the teaser trailer for Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie movie — a romantic comedy based on the notorious line of doll toys and scheduled to enter theaters on July 1, 2023 — had been released. Warner Bros. uploaded the trailer online officially on Friday morning, throwing Film Twitter into a frenzy over the plastic doll. But can you blame us? It’s an excellent teaser trailer.

The majority of the trailer is devoted to recreating the opening sequence of Kubrick’s 1968 science fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, which depicts prehistoric humans discovering an extraterrestrial monolith among them. There are no hairy apes learning how to use bones as tools in Gerwig’s Barbie trailer; instead, there are young girls playing with baby dolls. Instead of a monolith, actress Margot Robbie portrays a huge Barbie doll. Then, Gerwig recreates one of Kubrick’s most recognizable images: a flying bone that transforms into a flying saucer. Only this time, it is a flying baby doll that transforms into the Barbie logo title card. That is what I call a tribute!

The teaser then switches into rapid-fire scenes from the actual Barbie film: Robbie in a pink gingham dress surveying her Barbie dreamhouse kingdom; Ryan Gosling as a leather-vest-with-fringes-wearing biker version of a Ken doll; Issa Rae in a pink jumpsuit surrounded by her pink-jumpsuit-wearing posse; Simu Liu showing off his dance moves; and Robbie as Barbie in a sequence dress leading another dance number. Are we listening to a musical?! Huge if so.

On July 21, 2023, Barbie will premiere exclusively in theaters nationwide. Gerwig directed the picture and co-wrote the screenplay with her frequent partner Noah Baumbach. Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Connor Swindells, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, and Kingsley Ben-Adir round out the cast.
