Emma Mackey wants to ‘move beyond’ comparisons to Margot Robbie

Emma Mackey, who stars in “Sex Education,” said that she wanted to “get over” comparisons to Margot Robbie, who she co-starred with in “Barbie.”

Since Mackey’s breakout performance in Netflix’s “Sex Education,” fans have seen a resemblance between the two actors. The two were hired in Greta Gerwig’s next “Barbie” film, and rumours stated that they would each be portraying a different version of the well-known doll, furthering parallels.

Mackey said that she doesn’t mind being compared to Robbie since she admires the actress in a recent interview with Total Film.

It’s simply amusing, Mackey said to the media. “And I believe Margot has had the good grace and humour to be able to capitalise on it and thank her for allowing me to be in the same movie as her. In reality, it’s only a joke. We don’t look anything alike, I think to myself.”

She went on: “I’m OK with it. Margot Robbie appears. Are you serious? She is superior. She is someone I greatly admire. I have no problem with comparisons. But getting through that would be good.”

It’s not the first time Mackey has addressed the remarks about similarities. She expressed her desire for “people to stop comparing” her to Robbie to the Independent in 2020.

She remarked, “I truly simply don’t see it at all.” Although it’s flattering to be compared to Margot Robbie, I’d rather that people pay attention to the work that each of us are doing rather than how we appear.

Added Mackey: “Hollywood produces a constant stream of identical-looking individuals, and we like categorising people. We classify individuals because it is what we do as a species and have always done.”

Robbie also acknowledged that she was mistaken for the “Sex Education” actress at The Apple Pan cafe in Los Angeles during an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Ali Plumb.

I was having a burger when someone approached me, the Harley Quinn actor said. “They said things like, “I adored you in “Sex Education,” that programme is so awesome, we just began watching it.” I apologise, but it’s not me,” I said.”

Along with Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, and Issa Rae, “Barbie” also stars Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Mackey, who co-starred with them in “Sex Education.” The two stars, Barbie and Ken, will be portrayed by Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
