Inquest hears pensioner died when daughter reversed into her

An inquest heard that a 93-year-old granny passed away after being accidently driven over by her daughter as she was reversing her Audi A3 as her mother was emptying the trash.

Doris Breen, from Walesby, near Newark, was knocked to the ground outside the home of her daughter Hazel Smith in High Street, Eckington, Derbyshire, and had a traumatic brain injury.

Ms. Smith said in a statement to Chesterfield Coroner’s Court that she did not realise her mother had moved behind the vehicle to empty one of the trash cans as she was backing her car out of the garage and onto the driveway on Monday, May 2, this year, at approximately 2.15 p.m.

Ms. Smith reversed the vehicle as Ms. Breen began to go back toward the house, hitting her mother and sending her to the ground.

Ms. Smith said that she checked her mirrors before leaving, but she just didn’t notice her mother. When she heard the collision, she just came to a halt.

The senior had a head injury to the left side, but she was still awake and able to communicate. When she got to Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, she had a series of scans and tests.

It was discovered that the incident had caused Ms. Breen to have a traumatic brain injury.

The next day, Ms. Breen was moved to the Portland Ward, but when her health began to decline, it was determined that she should receive end-of-life care.

Ms. Breen was declared dead shortly after staff on the ward found she had stopped breathing at 11.20 p.m. on May 4, 2022.

Ms. Breen had been spending a couple evenings each week with her daughter in Eckington despite living alone in Walesby.

They were at her daughter’s home the day of the accident about to go out to supper.

The inquest heard that when Derbyshire police looked into Ms Breen’s death, the file was handed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), but the CPS decided there wasn’t enough evidence to pursue a criminal inquiry.

Assistant Coroner Miss Susan Evans declared at the hearing at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court that Ms. Breen had passed away as a consequence of an accident after being hit by her daughter’s vehicle, slamming her head on the pavement, and receiving additional injuries as well as a traumatic brain damage.
