Mikel Arteta acknowledged on Tuesday that his behavior on the sidelines may “become heated,” as the Arsenal manager acknowledged that it is essential for managers to maintain emotional control.
Jurgen Klopp has been charged with inappropriate conduct by the Football Association following his dismissal from Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City.
Klopp was taken to the stands for his heated reaction against referee Anthony Taylor and one of his assistants after Bernardo Silva’s challenge on Mohamed Salah did not result in a foul call.
The German’s conduct and City manager Pep Guardiola’s violent exchanges with Liverpool supporters in the stand behind the dugout during the same match have raised the scrutiny on Premier League sideline managers.
After approaching Klopp, Arteta was restrained by his coaching staff after Arsenal’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in November 2017.
Arteta is aware that emotions will be high in the dugout, but he recognizes that managers must set a better example.
Before Thursday’s Europa League match against PSV Eindhoven, Arteta remarked, “We have a responsibility, not just to the referees but also to the game and how we want it to be played and respected.”
“I’ve had enough of my behavior. I am attempting to do what is best for our club. Extremely intense. It becomes intense.”
Arteta believes that the VAR system has increased the strain on managers, as contentious reviews have created additional flashpoints during intense battles.
Arteta stated, “There are instances in the last few games where VAR needs to intervene, and there is a lot of controversy and a lot of situations when the outcome is uncertain because it hinges on a decision.”
“It is difficult to manage, but we have a tremendous obligation. If I were to see myself on video after a match, there are likely some adjustments I would make.
“But once you are there, the way you talk, even to your own players, you might do things differently.
“It is something we have to learn. We are all mindful of it. Occasionally, the pressure of the game causes you to behave in a certain way.”
