Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers state, has disputed former militant leader Asari Dokubo’s assertion that the Nigerian military is responsible for 99 percent of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region.
In an interview with Vanguard, Cole acknowledged some military complicity in crude oil theft but argued that Dokubo’s estimation was exaggerated.
Military’s Involvement in Oil Theft, According to Tonye Cole
Cole, an APC chieftain, stated that although there are individuals within the military who aid in oil theft, attributing 99 percent of the incidents to military involvement is an excessive claim.
He suggested that Dokubo’s assumption implies that almost all oil theft in the region is solely carried out by the military, which he finds implausible.
Cole also expressed his belief that the military is not resentful of Dokubo’s accusations.
Yerima Shettima’s Perspective on Asari Dokubo’s Claims
Yerima Shettima, the National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), commented on Asari Dokubo’s allegations regarding illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta region.
In an interview with Vanguard, Shettima supported Dokubo’s claims, emphasizing that the accusations against the Nigerian military are not new.
He pointed out that even former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike had previously stated that some security personnel are involved in oil bunkering and pipeline vandalism.
Shettima’s Call for President Bola Tinubu’s Intervention
Shettima expressed his belief in Dokubo’s allegations and urged President Bola Tinubu to address the situation.
He suggested that Tinubu should make a decision regarding the claims made about illegal oil bunkering and military involvement in the Niger Delta region.
