According to disgruntled show creators, Netflix canceled ‘1899’ after only one season

Sorry, 1899 fans. The chance of a second season of the Netflix series has passed, despite the show ranking No. 2 on the streaming service’s Top 10 chart during its first week.

Baran bo Odar, who co-created 1899 with Jantje Friese, broke the news in an Instagram post published on Monday, January 2nd. Additionally, the pair worked on Dark, an additional Netflix series that aired for three seasons between 2017 and 2020.

The message begins, “With a heavy heart, we must inform you that 1899 will not be renewed,” and is signed by both Odar and Friese. “We would have loved to conclude this amazing trip with a second and third season, as we did with Dark.” But occasionally things do not go according to plan. Such is life. We are aware that this will disappoint millions of fans. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this amazing journey. We love you. Never forget.”

The eight-part series 1899 follows a group of passengers going from London to New York City aboard the Kerberos steamer in the year 1899. When Captain Eyk (Andreas Pietschmann) attempts to rescue the missing ship Prometheus, events take a surprising turn.

In addition to the weird events that ensue, the series boasts a cast of European actors, including Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau. Each actor talked in his or her native tongue, including English, French, Spanish, Cantonese, Danish, and Polish, to create a multilingual masterpiece.

“Being faithful to the cultures and languages was crucial,” Friese previously told Deadline. “We never wanted to have people from different places, but everyone spoke English.” “We wanted to discover the core of Europe, where everyone is from a different place and speaks a different language, because language defines so much of your culture and behavior.”

According to IndieWire, similarly to Dark, the filmmakers planned a three-season run, which is why the first season finale ended on a significant cliffhanger. Unfortunately, it appears that we will never know what happened afterwards.

1899 is currently available to watch on Netflix.
