A man dies after serious accident on M4 early this morning

Police have reported that a man has died after a “serious incident” on the M4 in South Wales early this morning.

At 4:22 in the morning, officers were summoned to the scene on the eastbound carriageway between Junctions 29 and 30 at Cardiff Gate.

Police initially labelled the incident as “serious,” but later acknowledged a fatality.

In the early afternoon, the road was reopened.

Following two incidents early this morning, police in Wales closed off portions of both sides of the M4 this morning.

Around 8:00 a.m., a second collision occurred, necessitating the closure of the westbound lanes between Junctions 24 Coldra and 25 Caerleon.

It was also closed in the eastbound direction between Junctions 24 Coldra and 26 Malpas, but it reopened before noon.

This morning, Inrix, a provider of transportation data, reported at least 1.5 miles of congestion beginning at Junction 30.

On social media, irate drivers complained that they had been without water and in need of a bathroom since 7:45 am.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: ‘The road was closed for an investigation to be carried out at the scene. The road has now reopened.

‘The public are thanked for their patience and understanding. Next of kin has been updated and enquiries are on-going.’

South Wales Police earlier described the second incident as ‘serious’, without giving details.

Traffic Wales South said: ‘Heavy congestion travelling in both directions.

‘Emergency services are on scene. Please find alternative route if you’re travelling.’

Around 6am, the force tweeted: ‘South Wales Police are currently dealing with a serious incident on the M4 at junction 30 eastbound.

‘The road will be closed until further notice, we would recommend that alternative routes be used. Thank you for your patience and understanding.’

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called to a collision on the M4 near Newport this morning, with multiple resources sent to the scene.’

There were no immediate details on the second crash, but a Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called to an incident near junction 30 of the M4 earlier today, with multiple resources sent to the scene.’
